Service availability

BreastScreen Queensland Cairns has temporarily suspended routine breast screening due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We understand the concerns this decision may cause.

Please be assured that:

  • all women with cancelled appointments will be notified directly, as soon as possible. We will also contact these clients to reschedule appointments once we can re-open as well as clients who are due for rescreening during this time.
  • the screening pathway will be completed for women who have recently had a breast screen.
  • women will continue to receive their results either in the post or through their BreastScreen Queensland online account and if a woman provided her doctor’s details, they will also receive correspondence regarding her results.

BreastScreen Queensland will continue to provide assessment services for women who have been asked to return following their screening for additional tests.

We will also continue to encourage women to remain aware of the normal look and feel of their breasts and to report any changes to their doctor immediately.

This is a rapidly changing situation and we will keep you updated via our website (www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au) about when breast screening services will be available again. If you have any question or concerns, we encourage you to call your local service on 13 20 50.

If you have an appointment

Stay at home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention. If you’re feeling unwell, call us on 13 20 50 to cancel or reschedule your breast screening appointment.

If you’re feeling well, it’s important that you access your usual health services, including breast screening if you're due.

If well, you don’t need a COVID-19 vaccination or COVID-19 testing (PCR or RAT) to attend a BreastScreen Queensland service. However, anyone with COVID symptoms, anyone who is a COVID close contact (in isolation) and anyone on a quarantine order should not attend a clinic. In the interest of the public health and safety of staff and other clients, you will be asked to wear a mask during your appointment.
