Medicare
Medicare provides access to free hospital care and assistance with doctors' fees.

General practitioners
If it is not an emergency, you should go to see a doctor in the community, called a general practitioner or GP.  You can choose which doctor or medical centre to visit.  Some doctors 'bulk bill' which means you do not pay anything but present your Medicare card and sign a form so that the doctor can claim the payment directly.  Other doctors may charge a fee and provide you with a receipt for you to take to the nearest Medicare office to receive your rebate (payment back).  The Yellow Pages telephone directory has a listing under 'medical practitioners'. You must make an appointment to see a general practitioner.

Emergencies
Queensland Health’s free public hospital system provides quality emergency care 24 hours a day.  Fully trained doctors and nurses are on duty or, in some rural hospitals, on immediate call, to help with medical emergencies. You don’t need an appointment to go to an Emergency Department. If you feel you need emergency medical care then go to your nearest hospital Emergency Department. Treatment is provided free at Queensland Health hospitals. You will pay for services if you attend the Emergency Department of a private hospital.

Hospitals
Queensland Health provides free public hospital services.  This link has a list of hospitals and facilities throughout Queensland.
